Afternoon tea at Middletons Hotel , York

Middletons Hotel is located a short walk outside the centre of York and within sight of the city walls. The hotel is tucked away off Skeldergate, just back from the river and its 56 bedrooms are spread out over 6 buildings many of which are listed buildings. Despite being a large hotel it feels very intimate and has the typical historic feel of a lot of the buildings in York.

Traditional afternoon tea is served in the conservatory which is a beautiful room with a rustic feel. There is also an outdoor seating area for those sunnier days. We felt really well looked after while we were there and all the staff were friendly and helpful. We didn’t feel rushed and enjoyed taking our time.

Afternoon tea

Traditional afternoon tea is served on cake stands with a selection of sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam and a selection of tiny cakes. I had a vegetarian tea and Pip had a child’s tea although she got as much food as everyone else. The food was delicious and plentiful.

We each had a hot drink (hot chocolate and tea) and then Andy also had a latte and Pip a soft drink which was included in the price.

Booking offers

We bought vouchers for the adult teas through the Yorkshire Food Guide website which cost us £22 per person and then phoned to book a table. Booking this way sends you a voucher to be shown on the day. We paid for Pip’s tea on the day which was £17.

Allergies and dietary requirements

Middletons were excellent at checking allergies and will try and cater for all dietary requirements. They did mention that the kitchen is not fully nut free due to the risk of cross contamination.
