For my Dad’s birthday we bought him a cheese making experience day and I got to tag along. If you like cheese then this is the most amazing day out as not only is it really interesting, it’s in a beautiful location and you get to eat lots of cheese!!
How it works
Lacey’s is an independent cheese makers based in Reeth, North Yorkshire. They make a variety of cheeses that they sell locally as well as at Farmer’s Markets. Lacey’s is owned and run by Simon who is incredibly passionate about cheese, very knowledgeable and very entertaining.
The day runs from 10am until 4pm and starts with a huge vat of milk and ends with wheels of cheese. In between there is plenty of hot drinks, some science and quite a lot of hard work. The day is very hands on and with a group size of a maximum of 8 people there is plenty of opportunity to have a go at all the stages of cheese making. There’s also lots of opportunity for asking questions and indulging your inner cheese making nerd.
We got to do everything from the titration test to check that the bacteria levels in the milk are just right, adding the rennet, cutting the curd and stacking to putting the cheese in the wheel molds. We also got to wax some cheeses to take home with us.
Lunch is served in the diary and is a cheese board per couple with a selection of Lacey’s cheeses. Even better, if you don’t manage to eat all your cheese, it’s wrapped up to take home in a goodie bag. We also got to try some delicious ice cream from their sister ice cream company.

Our thoughts
I can’t even begin to explain how much fun this day was. If you like cheese and/or are interested in cheese making and the science behind it then this really does make an amazing present or treat for either a loved on or yourself (because life is too short for waiting for other people to treat you).
Simon really makes the day fun and very entertaining. The other people in our group were great and the cheese is delicious.

Dad and I had our Cheese Day in September 2025.
