Andy and Pip spent the half term week in Spain playing golf and seeing family. I’m not a golfer and I also had to work so I had a solo week at home. I am an excellent boss though so I did give myself Wednesday off so that I could have a mid week adventure amongst the work and whatever the equivalent of spring cleaning in October is.
On Wednesday my dad and I packed our bags (with outdoor gear for every weather imaginable) and 2 out of 3 spaniels and set off for Nidderdale. Normally when I plan a day out and get carried away, I get eye rolls from my dad but this time I did manage to sneak in two side quests. Even more surprising, he enjoyed it so much that he added on two side quests of his own. So we walked the 4.5 mile route around Grimwith reservoir in all its autumnal glory, then we went to Stump Cross caverns for lunch. After lunch we drove to Parcevall Hall and Appletreewick to look at some of the places he spent many many holidays growing up and then we stopped at Coldstone’s Cut on the way home (which was a little disappointing and by that point the spaniels definitely had the look of “why on earth are we getting out of the car again”).

We did well with the weather and it held out until we got to Coldstone’s Cut when we got rain, wind and rainbows. The day was definitely worth it for the walk, the scenery and the lunch. I’d highly recommend pairing Grimwith with a giant sausage roll and cake at Stump Cross.

Aside from the very exciting Wednesday, the rest of the week was spent sorting, tidying and cleaning. Basically if it didn’t move, it was disinfected, scrubbed or hoovered!
I spent Sunday cooking (like a bear preparing for hibernation) so we are now fully stocked up on granola, cake and chilli. I also welcomed Pip and Andy home with a roast dinner. I still need to find time to turn the pumpkins in to soup though, maybe that’s a job for next week!
