Nola, York

Andy’s birthday request was oysters which is not an easy wish to grant when you have a Monday birthday! Most places that serve oysters were not open on a Monday evening but Nola is and has oysters on the menu, even better it is actually one the restaurants in York that I often walk past and think “ooooh we should eat there sometime”.

Nola was fabulous! The food was amazing and the decor is gorgeous. Unfortunately they didn’t have oysters on the day we went so Andy had mussels instead and still enjoyed his meal.

The restaurant is New Orleans themed and completely beautiful. Upstairs is more of a bar area with smaller tables and downstairs is more of a restaurant.

The Menu

The concept of the menu is small plates to allow you to be more adventurous, the advice is to order 2 plates and a side per person. The menu is also a mixture of cajun style food and global dishes.

Andy and Pip ordered 4 dishes between them to share and had mussels, BBQ Haddock Goujons, Pulled Pork Bao and Pork belly. I had Mac N Cheese and a Halloumi Burger. We then shared fries, a salad and Dirty Rice. Everything was amazing and more than enough food for all of us, I could have just had one dish and a side and still been full. Pip declared the Pulled Pork Bao to be the best thing she had ever tasted!

They have an extensive drinks menu and Pip and I had delicious mocktails, Pip had a raspberry mojito and I had a Citrus Smash.

Despite being very full we did manage dessert as well. We had a slice of key lime pie and they kindly brought Andy a birthday dessert with a candle and a birthday card.

Our thoughts

We used the weekday offer of 2 dishes and a side for £19.95 so despite having a lot of food our bill came to less than £100.00 for 3 of us. I thought it was excellent value for money for a birthday meal and for the quality and quantity of food.

We loved everything about the restaurant from the door and theming, the friendly staff and service and the amazing food and drink. We’ll definitely be back and would definitely recommend.

Location

Nola is a short walk from York train station on Lendal almost opposite the entrance to York Museum Gardens.
