Tufting Workshop at Tadatuft, Leeds

Pip and I had so much fun at the tufting workshop at Tadatuft, learning how to make our own miniature rugs. If you have even the tiniest bit of creative inclination then you need to try a rug making workshop.

What is it?

We did an afternoon workshop at Tadatuft where we learned how to use the equipment, made our own rugs and then had them backed and finished ready to take home.

The session starts with an introduction to the rug making process and the equipment, a demonstration and an opportunity to practice before getting started on your own work. You are then free to choose your colours and get on with making your rug. Throughout the session there are staff on hand to help and give pointers and advice so that you end up with the best possible finished piece.

At the end of the session, staff will give your rug a haircut and then back it ready to be taken home and hung on your wall.

How it works?

We booked for the mini rug workshop (a small rug 25x25cm) but there are also options to do workshops to make a standard rug, large rug, tote bag or mirror.

You can either draw your design out by hand or you can pick one of the designs from the gallery online. The general rule is to keep it as simple as possible as fine details are hard to get right for beginners. You send in your design before your session and when you arrive it is drawn on to your material for you at your station.

Each station is set up with the tufting gun and the other equipment that you need.

You then spend the rest of the session happily making your rug or frustratingly trying to create the image that you have in your head depending on how much of a natural you are. The session runs for 2.5 hours but you will need to finish before that point as it also includes the finishing of the rug.

As far as I could tell they try to set up the stations so that you are with the people you have booked with.

Facilities

There are toilets on site and water is provided. If you would like to bring your own refreshments, you can, in moderation.

Our thoughts

We really enjoyed this, especially Pip who was a natural. It’s a really relaxed session and very social and the staff were so friendly and helpful. It would be great for a birthday party or hen weekend but equally as a solo activity.
